Noctilucent Cloud

Noctilucent ('night-shining') clouds of ice high in the atmosphere, photographed in summer twilight by Pete Lawrence.

Target details

Noctilucent clouds – 'night-shining' clouds – are thin wisps of ice crystals high in Earth's upper atmosphere. They only appear during astronomical twilight, when the Sun has set for us on the ground but is still lighting up the clouds high above. They're mostly seen in summer from latitudes between 50° and 70° north or south of the Equator, which puts Northern Ireland right in the zone for spotting them.
