Bubble Nebula
The Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635) in Cassiopeia, photographed by Pete Lawrence: a shell of gas blown by the stellar wind of a hot young star.
Target details
The Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635, also Caldwell 11) is a glowing cloud of hydrogen gas in Cassiopeia, somewhere between 7,100 and 11,000 light-years away. Its shape comes from SAO 20575, the massive, hot young star near its centre (magnitude 8.7). About 300,000 years ago that star's fierce stellar wind began blowing a shell of gas and dust outwards, and where the shell runs into the surrounding molecular cloud it lights up as the bubble we see.
